The New Martinsville Glass Manufacturing Company brought out an unprecedented pattern at the end of 1928, their Line #33, Modernistic. As the pattern name suggests, this line bridged the gap between Modernism and Art Deco. This severely simple pyramidal pattern exemplifies the best of the Art Deco era, and lends itself to a variety of decorative treatments. Little documentation of this line is available and heretofore has been scattered among many different publications. This is the first comprehensive look at the Modernistic line, clearly illustrating the limited number of forms made in the pattern, all of the known production colors (with the exception of canary, mentioned in one primary source, but an example of which has not yet turned up), and many unusual decorations, both factory done and from outside decorating companies. The line is especially strong in the production of vanity items, but also includes console bowls, candlesticks, candy jars, creams and sugars, and vases. This book is a must for lovers of Art Deco and belongs in the library of every collector of New Martinsville glass.
