Plot

Includes 1996-1997 laid in price guide. This is the most current price guide for this book. Silhouette pictures as defined in this book are the colored pictures that are painted on the back side of the glass. This is also known as reverse painting on glass. They are usually black, but white, red, blue, rose or a combination of colors is also used. The subjects include children, couples, birds, dogs, horses, etc. Silhouettes have been used to decorate dishes, canisters, lamps, and many other items. The backgrounds were usually paper or foil; sometimes textured, tinted or with scenic depictions. The backing behind this background is usually grey or black cardboard. The hangers are sometimes attached directly to the glass; some may be a metal hanger that is attached to the back of the cardboard; some have a cut in the cardboard (meant to be folded out), with a hole for hanging. Silhouettes were sold in variety stores, dime stores, novelty stores, or given as promotional gifts from the 1920's through the early 1950's.
