A boat of Viking warriors finds a red-skinned child adrift at sea. The boy is taken among them, and learns their ways in addition to his. He learns much about the Viking people, as well as Frankland, from a mentor and father figure among the group. When that mentor is slain in battle, Arak feels no strong ties to anyone else, and he chooses his own path.
