Plot

From Library JournalA long overdue major contribution to the study of the institution of Speaker of the House, this is intended to stimu late and facilitate research into the posi tion and careers of the 46 speakers. Kennon cites more than 4200 published books and articles, unpublished doctor al dissertations, and manuscript collec tions. While neither comprehensive nor encyclopedic, the work does represent an exhaustive search to identify both the volume and variety of sources avail able. Criteria for published works in cluded significant information on the speakership as an institution or signifi cant references to one or more speak ers. Contents include a general section on the speakership and chapters on each speaker. Each chapter contains a short biographical sketch; manuscript collections; works by the Speaker; pro files, eulogies, and genealogies; works on history and politics; etc. Annota tions were omitted due to volume of material. An invaluable research tool; highly recommended to academic and public libraries. Charles E. Kratz, Hofstra Univ. Lib., Hempstead, N.Y.Copyright 1986 Reed Business Information, Inc.
