A history of Greene County, Georgia, formed from part of Washington County in 1786 and named in honor of General Nathanael Greene, a hero of the American Revolutionary War. In addition to a comprehensive history of the area, the book discusses historic homes, legends and lore, early events, Civil War and Reconstruction, laws and courts, banks and businesses and stories of Crackers' Neck. Many pages are devoted to genealogical material, including names of grantees and location of head rights to early settlers; some inscriptions from various cemeteries; biographical sketches of over thirty early citizens; muster rolls through the Civil War; lists of slave-owners in 1854; officers of Greene County, and 140 pages of Greene County marriage records. A comprehensive personal name, subject and place name index was prepared and included in this 1979 reprint edition.
