The present work comprises five chapters. In the first three the committee or councils of safety in the New England, the middle, and the southern colonies respectively are dealt with; the fourth presents a general view of the charatcer and work of these bodies; while the fifth and last seeks their origin in preceding English and colonial experience. The investigation rests almost wholly upon the sources; and the result is thoroughly enllightening for many important questions with the struggle for independence.
