Plot

Jonah and Ruth were both travelers. Jonah traveled alone while Ruth traveled with a companion. Jonah traveled away from God while Ruth traveled toward Him. Not only do we see human character (sometimes our own) portrayed in the journeys of Jonah and Ruthwe also see the character of God. In the Book of Jonah, we can examine God's persistence even with a runaway, His compassion for enemies, and His patience with a most reluctant student. The Book of Ruth reveals God's commitment to a social outcast, His kindness to an immigrant, and His faithfulness to a bitter old woman. We are all pilgrimstravelers through lifewho have choices about attitudes, companions, directions, and more. But no matter how much we feel that we choose our own paths, like Jonah and Ruth we are not really alone. God is our friend for the journey.
