"The declared purpose of the International Council on Biblical Authority, founded in 1977, is "the defense and application of the doctrine of biblical inerrancy as an essential element for the authority of Scripture and a necessity for the health of the church." This volume is a concrete result of one of the council's objectives: "To create and publish a clear statement on inerrancy endorsed by a united coalition of prominent evangelical scholars, declaring therein that the Bible is true not only in matters of faith and practice, but also in other matters such as statements relating to history and science." The writings are characterized by an irenic spirit. There is a repeated insistence that a belief in the inerrancy of the Bible is not the essence of Christian faith. At the same time, the message comes through with strong emphasis that inerrancy is taught in the Scriptures, was taught by the early church fathers, is wholly consistent with the character of the Scriptures, and is necessary to a well-founded, vigorous Christian life."
