THE STUDY PROJECT on Christianity in Apartheid Society (Spro-cas) comprised six commissions each concerned with aspects of our national life. The Economics, Education, Political, Legal and Church commissions each had a distinct and clearly defined area of study, although these areas were closely inter-related and some overlap in the work of the various commissions was unavoidable. The ensuing sections of this chapter are aimed at providing a broad summary outline of salient features of South African society as a background against which the more detailed contributions by particular authors can be assessed. Since efforts to achieve greater justice in a society at large should be based on a thorough understanding of that society, the aim has also been to explain the nature and causes of apartheid society.
