Vividly portraying the historic emergence of the New Leftist culture among British youth, this examination captures the turbulent political times of the 1950s and 1960s in northeast England. Beginning with the group’s creation—motivated in part by the threat of nuclear annihilation amidst the superpower conflict—this record reviews its various activities, from the “Ban the Bomb” protests for the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament to upheavals in the Labor Party youth movement. Drawing from numerous interviews with participants—including the author himself—this investigation explores the social, cultural, and historical contexts of the times, discussing the developments and dilemmas that had the most impact on the group. Contributing to the history of this fascinating period and its events, this document also touches on the political veterans who influenced it, including the notorious Gerry Healy and T. Dan Smith.
