The modernization of agriculture in African economies has generated new forms of poverty and hunger. Philip Raikes presents an overview of the food crisis in Africa, and maintains that current policies are as likely to aggravate as to solve the problem. He sees the African situation as an aspect of the broader long term transformation of agriculture in the USA and northern Europe.
