In this, the United Nations Decade for Cultural Development, a group of contributors investigate our planet's multicultural diversity and the implications this has for humanity's future. As well as addressing the general problem of the balance between unity and diversity, and stressing the communality of human experience, this book discusses each of the world's major cultures in detail, celebrates their distinctive features and considers the specific questions of cultural interrelationship that affect each of them. The report is intended to make a contribution to the peaceful development of humanity by focusing attention on the phenomenon of culture as the key to development and peace in a complex and changing world.
