This is the first book to offer a comprehensive survey of 19th and 20th century Moroccan rugs and textiles, and features an outstanding collection of mainly rural carpets and covers, tent-weavings, bags, trapping and garments in 115 stunning color plates. The text examines the rice tradition of Moroccan textiles, which has emerged from a number of different weaving the indigenous Berber tribes of the High and Middle Atlas; the Arab-speaking tribes of the plains of Marrakesh; and the commercial urban centers of Rabat and Mediouna. This combination of origins has produced a richly varied weaving culture which is renowned for its use of strong color and geometric design. A chapter on the different weaving traditions is followed by sections on each region, illustrated with beautifully reproduced plates of the best examples.
