Although largely unknown today, American author and musician, Paul Bowles, was an influential figure in New York’s bohemian society in the 1930s. At the height of his success, following the release of 1949 novel "The Sheltering Sky", Bowles turned his back on the U.S. to begin a new life in Morocco with his wife, the author Jane Auer. Celebrity writers such as Truman Capote and Gore Vidal followed the charismatic Bowles to Tangiers and an illustrious circle of eccentric friends was formed. Although both Bowles and Auer indulged in homosexual relationships, they maintained an intense life-long bond. Using conversations with Bowles, interviews with numerous fellow companions, archive recordings and original animations, this documentary captures the life of a man who remained a restless traveller who never committed to anything – least of all his own identity.
