Here is a field guide, gazetteer and notebook all in one. It not only identifies 84 common species of garden and woodland birds, but lists sites where they can be seen, and provides space for recording observations.

The colour plates in the field guide, from the Reader's Digest Nature Lover's Library, are a first-rate identification guide, with accompanying text to explain key facts. Beneath every panel, page references direct you to the gazetteer section at the back of the book, listing sites where there is an excellent chance of seeing the species.

The sites, mainly National Trust property with easy access, are spread all over Britain. Individually described, they offer superb opportunities for memorable days out, often with the bonus of magnificent scenery, splendid walks, an historic house or fine garden.

The spotter's panels for recording sightings and other observations introduce the excellent habit of taking natural history records, make identification easier next time, and bring back happy memories of days in the field.
