The Aline Tunnel and associated trackage is probably the most historic bit of railroadiana in the world. Constructed by the DSP&P Railroad at a staggering cost in dollars and lives, the Tunnel was used to haul people and freight over the continental divide from 1881-1909. The now abandoned tunnel, located in the towering Saguache Range, was one of the highlights on the most spectacular narrow gauge railroading in North America: The track from Buena Vista to Gunnison, Colorado. This is the first professional video ever made showing the inside of the tunnel. Blocked at both ends, the tunnel is accessible only occasionally from the west portal and with great difficulty. Six people, determined to shoot the entire length, prepare to gain entrance on the dark and rain threatening morning of August 23, 1992. This video contains actual footage from the west portal to the eastern cave-in and back. The entire trip was recorded in stereophonic sound. Hike with us through the 100 year old tunnel while in the safety of your living room
