These books are for children who recognize familiar words with ease, and are developing a range of word attack skills. There are varied, simple sentence patterns, many familiar objects and actions, and illustrations that provide moderate to high support. Some specialized vocabulary is introduced in this stage.
Stage Three: Reading By Myself
These books are for children who are reading independently and require only moderate assistance when challenged by vocabulary, concept, or content. The sentences are longer and more varied, as is the vocabulary. There continues to be illustrative support and a greater use of access features such as diagrams, captions, glossary and index.
Stage Four: Reading With Ease
These books are designed for increasingly proficient readers who are reading with confidence. Vocabulary is more challengingand specialized, illustrations provide less support, and more complex diagrams, maps and charts are used. The concepts become more abstract and technical. These are the perfect introduction to reference books.
