A New Creation
“if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation”
2 Corinthians 5:17
Steps to a New Life
Steps to a New Life
Beginning of the Gospel
Matthew 3:1-2 In those days John the Baptist came preaching in the wilderness of Judea,2 and saying, "Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand!"
Command of Jesus
Matthew 4:17 From that time Jesus began to preach and to say, "Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand."
Repent or Perish
Luke 13:1-3 -"Do you suppose that these Galileans were worse sinners than all other Galileans, because they suffered such things? 3 I tell you, no; but unless you repent you will all likewise perish.
Most Difficult Command
Acts 2:38 Repent, and let every one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.
Essential to Conversion
Acts 3:19 Repent therefore and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out, so that times of refreshing may come from the presence of the Lord,
Commanded of Everyone
Acts 17:30 Truly, these times of ignorance God overlooked, but now commands all men everywhere to repent,
Modern man tends to a this-worldly viewpoint – God is largely irrelevant to his everyday concerns
Thayer: “To change one’s mind for the better, heartily to amend with abhorrence of one’s past sins”
Analytical Greek Lexicon: “To undergo a change in frame of mind and feelings; to repent”
Peter Cartright
“Who is General Jackson? Andrew Jackson will go to hell if he does not repent, just as as anyone else.”
Jackson: “Sir, if I had a regiment of men like you, I could whip the world.”
To Turn from Sin
Patrick Morley” “The church’s integrity problem is the misconception that we can add Christ to our lives, but not subtract sin. It is a change in belief without a change in behavior.” (in “I Surrender”)
Two Kinds of Repentance
2 Corinthians 7:8-10 For even if I made you sorry with my letter, I do not regret it; though I did regret it. For I perceive that the same epistle made you sorry, though only for a while.9 Now I rejoice, not that you were made sorry, but that your sorrow led to repentance. For you were made sorry in a godly manner, that you might suffer loss from us in nothing.10 For godly sorrow produces repentance leading to salvation, not to be regretted; but the sorrow of the world produces death.
Paul’s Strong Words
Godly sorrow differs from worldly sorrow
Paul said it gave him pain to write so sharply to his brethren – 2 Cor. 2:1-4
But when he heard it produced repentance, his pain turned to joy.
Paul’s Strong Words
Godly sorrow produces repentance
Repentance is a change of mind produced by godly sorrow which produces a change of conduct.
Worldy sorrow unto death
Matthew 27:3-5 Then Judas, His betrayer, seeing that He had been condemned, was remorseful and brought back the thirty pieces of silver to the chief priests and elders,4 saying, "I have sinned by betraying innocent blood." And they said, "What is that to us? You see to it!" 5 Then he threw down the pieces of silver in the temple and departed, and went and hanged himself.
