Do Emotions Rule Your Life?
What are Emotions?
Emotion, "a (physical) moving, stirring, agitation," from Latin emotere or exmovere "move out, stir up, agitate.”
Strong feelings, frequently resulting in mental, and ultimately physical action
Emotions are Powerful!
Our emotions are given to us by God
 Genesis 1:27 God created man in His own image; in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them.
God Has Emotions
Grief - Genesis 6:6 grieved in His heart.
Anger – Exodus 4:14 the anger of the LORD was kindled against Moses
Joy – Prov.8:30-31 my delight was with the sons of men.
Love - John 3:16 so loved the world
Jesus Showed Emotions
Anger - Mark 3:5 He looked at them with anger, grieved by the hardness of their hearts,
Sorrow - John 11:35 Jesus wept
Compassion – Matt 9:36 He was moved with compassion for them
Agony – Heb 5:7 offered up prayers and supplications, with vehement cries and tears
Emotion can cause us “to move”
Emotion can cause us to move or act a certain way
 Acts 12:14 When she recognized Peter's voice, because of her gladness she ran in and announced that Peter stood before the gate.
 Acts 16:29-30 Then he ran in, and fell down trembling before Paul and Silas.30 And he brought them out and said,"Sirs, what must I do to be saved?"
Feelings can be misused
Genesis 4:5 Cain was very angry, and his countenance fell.
Numbers 20:1-13 Moses struck the rock
James 1:19-20 So then, my beloved brethren, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath;20 for the wrath of man does not produce the righteousness of God.

Emotions we do not share with God
Fear / Afraid (Mat. 8:26).
Anxiety (Luke 12:26)
Despair / Hopelessness (Job 3).
Emotions can overpower reason.
How we feel about a situation can be far from reality (e.g., Gen. 37:35).
Emotion such as fear can lead us to inaccurately judge others (1 Sam. 17:24).
Emotions can often lead to impulsive and foolish behavior (Prov. 1:16a)
Proper Use of Emotions
Emotions do not determine truth
 Proverbs 14:12 There is a way that seems right to a man, But its end is the way of death.
 Romans 1:25 who exchanged the truth of God for the lie, and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator
 2 Thessalonians 2:9-10 with all unrighteous deception among those who perish, because they did not receive the love of the truth, that they might be saved.
Proper Use of Emotions
Emotion is not our guide in religion
 Isaiah 1:18 "Come now, and let us reason together," Says the LORD,
 Romans 10:2 For I bear them witness that they have a zeal for God, but not according to knowledge.
 Ephesians 5:17 Therefore do not be unwise, but understand what the will of the Lord is.
 2 Timothy 2:15 Be diligent to present yourself approved to God, a worker who does not need to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.

Proper Use of Emotions
Godly Emotions are vital to pleasing God
 Deuteronomy 6:4-5 You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your strength.
 1 Corinthians 13:3 And though I bestow all my goods to feed the poor, and though I give my body to be burned, but have not love, it profits me nothing.
 Revelation 2:4 Nevertheless I have this against you, that you have left your first love.
