Can Eternal Life be Forfeited?
1 John 5:11-12
1 John 5:11-13
And this is the testimony: that God has given us eternal life, and this life is in His Son. He who has the Son has life; he who does not have the Son of God does not have life.
1 John 5:11-13
These things I have written to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, that you may know that you have eternal life, and that you may continue to believe in the name of the Son of God
1 John 5:11-13
He who has the Son has life … he who does not have the Son of God does not have life.
Christ is our Life …
John 14:6 "I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.
John 15:4 Abide in Me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in Me.
Colossians 3:4 When Christ who is our life appears, we shall appear with Him in glory …
Romans 1:16-17
For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ, for it is the power of God to salvation for everyone who believes, for the Jew first and also for the Greek. For in it the righteousness of God is revealed from faith to faith; as it is written, "The just shall live by faith.
Hebrews 10:38-39
Now the just shall live by faith; But if anyone draws back, My soul has no pleasure in him."39 But we are not of those who draw back to perdition, but of those who believe to the saving of the soul.
Can Saving Faith be Lost?
Can a person possess true saving faith for a time, but later lose his hold on it?
Luke 8:11-15
11 "Now the parable is this: The seed is the word of God.
12 Those by the wayside are the ones who hear; then the devil comes and takes away the word out of their hearts, lest they should believe and be saved.
13 But the ones on the rock are those who, when they hear, receive the word with joy; and these have no root, who believe for a while and in time of temptation fall away.
Believe (Gr., pisteuo)
“Used especially of the faith by which a man embraces Jesus, i.e. a conviction, full of joyful trust, that Jesus is the Messiah – the divinely appointed author of eternal salvation in the kingdom of God, conjoined with obedience to Christ” … Thayer, p. 511
But this can be used of a conviction that falls short – John 2:23-25; James 2:19
Luke 8:11-15
13 But the ones on the rock are those who, when they hear, receive the word with joy; and these have no root, who believe for a while and in time of temptation fall away.
15 But the ones that fell on the good ground are those who, having heard the word with a noble and good heart, keep it and bear fruit with patience.
Keeping the Word …
John 8:51 Most assuredly, I say to you, if anyone keeps My word he shall never see death."
Luke 11:28 But He said, "More than that, blessed are those who hear the word of God and keep it!"
1 Corinthians 15:1-2 Moreover, brethren, I declare to you the gospel … by which also you are saved, if you hold fast that word which I preached to you –
1 Timothy 4:16 Take heed to yourself and to the doctrine. Continue in them, for in doing this you will save both yourself and those who hear you.
1 John 2:24-25
Therefore let that abide in you which you heard from the beginning. If what you heard from the beginning abides in you, you also will abide in the Son and in the Father.25 And this is the promise that He has promised us -- eternal life.
Colossians 1:21-23
21 And you, now He has reconciled 22 , to present you holy, and blameless, and above reproach in His sight --23 if indeed you continue in the faith, grounded and steadfast, and are not moved away from the hope of the gospel which you heard, …
Can the Faithful Become Unfaithful?
Is there the possibility that one who is at one time faithful can become careless and more interested in worldly things?
Luke 12:42-46
42 And the Lord said, "Who then is that faithful and wise steward, whom his master will make ruler over his household, to give them their portion of food in due season?
43 Blessed is that servant whom his master will find so doing when he comes.44 Truly, I say to you that he will make him ruler over all that he has.
Luke 12:42-46
45 But if that servant says in his heart, 'My master is delaying his coming,' and begins to beat the male and female servants, and to eat and drink and be drunk,
46 the master of that servant will come on a day when he is not looking for him, and at an hour when he is not aware, and will cut him in two and appoint him his portion with the unbelievers.
1 Corinthians 9:24-27
24 Do you not know that those who run in a race all run, but one receives the prize? Run in such a way that you may obtain it.25 And everyone who competes for the prize is temperate in all things. Now they do it to obtain a perishable crown, but we for an imperishable crown.26 Therefore I run thus: not with uncertainty. Thus I fight: not as one who beats the air.27 But I discipline my body and bring it into subjection, lest, when I have preached to others, I myself should become disqualified.
1 Corinthians 10:1-12
5 But with most of them God was not well pleased, for their bodies were scattered in the wilderness.6 Now these things became our examples, to the intent that we should not lust after evil things as they also lusted.
11 Now all these things happened to them as examples, and they were written for our admonition, upon whom the ends of the ages have come. 12 Therefore let him who thinks he stands take heed lest he fall.
