On the West Coast in the early days of World War II, ten-year old Duke Cooper (Trevor Morgan) is worried about the fate of his older brother and irritated by the whimpiness of his younger brother PeeWee (Haley Joel Osment), while tolerating his good-humored mother Barbara Cooper (Pam Dawber). Worse yet, Duke’s Japanese American friend Willy Tanaka (Yuki Tokuhiro) and his relatives like Abe Tanaka (Pat Morita) have been shipped off to an internment camp. When Duke is saved from drowning by a mysterious Japanese sailor Matsuo Yomma (Yuji Okumoto) who has been shipwrecked along the coast, he decides to help the man. He begins to realize that the Japanese are not monsters after all.
