When basketball star, Ed Beck, center for the University of Kentucky’s 1958 NCAA Championship team, met student nurse, Billie Ray, he was captivated by her beauty, compassion and gentleness. They soon fell in love and were married. The pretty young nurse and the handsome athlete – together they shared an extraordinary zest for life and a deepening Christian faith. Yet, while Ed was winning victories for Kentucky’s fabled Wildcat basketball team, Billie was fighting for her life. Billie had cancer. She knew she was dying, but even in the darkest hour of her illness – when pain and suffering were almost too much to bear – she saw a glint of hope. “Ask God to use this disease for His honor and glory,” she told her husband over and over again.
