In January of 2002, Daniel Pearl (Dan Futterman) was a journalist and chief of the South Asia bureau of the Wall Street Journal. While conducting interviews for a story on shoe bomber Richard Reid in Karachi, Pakistan, he was kidnapped and eventually killed by Pakistani militants. He left behind his wife Mariane (Angelina Jolie) who was six months pregnant. The Department of Justice and Diplomatic Security Service launched an investigation to find the kidnappers. Mariane joined the intense search to find him, but to no avail. Mariane began writing a memoir of the ordeal to introduce her son to the father he would never meet.
