Adam Pedersen (Ulricht Thomsen) is a former Neo-Nazi gang leader who is released from prison and must spend time in a religious reform house in order to gain full return to freedom. The priest in charge of the community, Ivan (Mads Mikkelsen) tells Adam that he must select a task to complete, and once completed he will be free. Selecting the simple task of baking an apple pie Adam thinks to get out free and easy, but the task is made more difficult by Ivan. As Adam attempts to complete his task he comes to an understanding of Ivan through discovery of his son's illness when he counsels a distraught pregnant woman, Sarah Svendsen (Paprika Steen), as well as through a confrontation that ensues between another prisoner Khalid (Ali Kazim) and some of Adam's former gang members. Through this Adam is confronted with many choices about coming to the completion of his task.
