Fried Green Tomatoes is a 1991 adaptation of the novel Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Cafe by Fannie Flagg. While in a nursing home waiting room, Evelyn Couch (Kathy Bates) meets Ninny Threadgoode (Jessica Tandy), an elderly lady. Ninny relays the story of Whistle Stop, a since abandoned city in Alabama. Ninny details the lives of the two women who worked at the Whistle Stop Cafe, Idgie Threadgoode (Mary Stuart Masterson) and Ruth Jamison (Mary-Louise Parker). The tales of Ruth and Idgie empower the young Evelyn who had been experiencing marriage problems and a diminished sense of self-esteem. Evelyn, in the end, builds a strong friendship with the elderly Ninny.
