Recently divorced Meg Altman and her feisty daughter Sarah have decided to move and start their lives over. They settle on a larger, older New York home whose previous owner was a chronic worrywart. His modern addition to the house is the hidden "panic room," which Meg notices and feels drawn to right away. This inpenetrable secret room can be used for the homeowner to take cover if a breakin should occur. During Meg and Sarah's first night in the new house, three burglars do break in. Unfortunately, the three burglars have intimate knowledge of the panic room, Meg is claustrophobic, Sarah has low blood sugar, and the line connecting the panic room to the police hasn't been hooked up yet. Worse yet, what the burglars are after isn't in the main living area of the house: it's in the panic room with Meg and Sarah, and the three men have no intention of leaving until they get it.
