Jean Janes (Catherine McCormack) is a journalist researching a murder that occurred in 1873, where two women were savagely murdered with an axe, to weave into her current story of a brutal double murder that recently occurred. Jean discovers a stash oh newspapers from 1873 that give lurid accounts of the murders by someone who seems to have been an eyewitness at the time. The movie unfolds as the story this eyewitness tells reveals details about the sensational axe murder of 1873 parallels Jean’s live and her crumbling marriage. Jean’s husband Thomas (Sean Penn) is a jealous man who always suspects Jean of infidelities.
