The book is as described featuring all railway companies, and giving a brief history of each including amalgamations and extinctions etc. There is also a section on light rail and tramways, but unfortunately in this there is no reference to the former Lancaster Canal tramway that joined the main canal to the stub that joined the Leeds to Liverpool canal at Walton Summit. Exhaustive research and produced in a simple way make this an interesting addition to any collection, there is also a timeline at the rear, and the text is accompanied by black and white photo's. There is one on page 151 that shows a very imaginative conversion of a viaduct, full marks to those responsible, and the one on page 169 which shows a very original conversion. A good buy, a good research tool, and extremely useful when the reader comes across an acronym in another railway book.
