Before there were parenting blogs, trophies for showing up, and peanut allergies, there was a simpler time called the '80s. For geeky 11-year old Adam these were his wonder years and he faced them armed with a video camera to capture all the crazy. The Goldbergs are a loving family like any other, just with a lot more yelling. Mom Beverly is a classic "smother," an overbearing, overprotective matriarch who rules this brood with 100% authority and zero sense of boundaries. Dad Murray is gruff, hot-tempered and trying to parent without screaming. Sister Erica is 17, hot, terrifying and not one to mess with. Barry is 16, a grade A spaz with classic middle child syndrome. Adam is the youngest, a camera-wielding future director who’s crushing on an older woman. Rounding out the family is beloved grandfather Al "Pops" Solomon, the wild man of the clan, a shameless Don Juan who's schooling Adam in the ways of love. When Pops buys a new sports car and offers his Caddy to middle child Barry, it’s enough to drive this already high-strung family to the brink of chaos.
Under the watchful eye of an eleven-year-old boy's video camera, the Goldbergs face the challenges of life in the 80s, including two new teenage drivers and a grandfather who shouldn't be allowed behind the wheel.
A day out with Erica leaves Murray wishing he hadn't asked about her life. Their annual school wardrobe shopping trip leaves Beverly and Adam at odds.
Barry wants money to buy an expensive pair of basketball shoes, so Murray hires him to work at his furniture store. When Beverly prohibits him from seeing a new horror movie, Adam goes behind her back.
As Beverly tries playing matchmaker for Pops, Adam and Barry bond over their discovery of a scrambled porn channel on TV.
As Beverly discovers that her engagement ring is the same one Murray gave to his ex-fiancee, Adam looks to a romantic comedy for inspiration as he tries to woo his pretty neighbor.
As Adam abandons Pops to go trick-or-treating with a cool new friend, Beverly dons a costume so she can keep Barry from being embarrassed at a Halloween party.
Barry is thrilled at the freedom offered by his new driver's license, until Beverly lays down her rules of the road. Pops resists wearing a Life Alert necklace and is forced to call Adam when he needs help.
Beverly is determined to make friends with a standoffish neighbor. Barry and Erica battle for control of the family's one telephone line.
As Thanksgiving reignites the longstanding feud between Murray and his ne'er-do-well brother, Marvin, Barry's loss to Adam in a ball game shifts the balance of their sibling rivalry.
Erica's new job is jeopardized when Beverly goes overboard with her employee discount. Pops looks to change Barry's bad luck.
On the eve of the annual high school talent show, Beverly and Murray square off over Barry's plan to perform his karate routine, while Pops encourages Erica to sing.
When Beverly complains that Pops is spending too much time with her at home, she forces Murray to take him back to work at the furniture store. Adam reluctantly gives away his toy collection, hoping it will help him get his first kiss.
Micromanaging Barry and Erica's college searches pits Beverly against a rival meddling mom. Erica tells Pops that her efforts to enhance her college prospects are based on lies.
Beverly chaperons the school dance when, she learns Adam and Dana are attending it together. Murray endures teaching Barry about the birds and the bees.
While Adam worries about sexual tension between him and his longtime friend Emmy, Erica and Beverly square off over a lack of trust.
Barry and Erica join Adam and his friends on a Goonies-inspired treasure hunt for some family jewels misplaced by Pops.
As Murray struggles to get Adam interested in hockey, Beverly's efforts to help Erica prepare for her college entrance exams threaten to backfire.
As an unwanted new chair puts Murray on the warpath with Beverly, Adam regrets enlisting Barry's help to fend off a school bully.
Murray (Jeff Garlin) intervenes when Adam (Sean Giambrone) seeks Beverly's (Wendi McLendon-Covey) help to avoid a national physical fitness test. Barry (Troy Gentile) woos Erica's (Hayley Orrantia) French pen pal (guest star Bella Dayne).
To get his little brother his first kiss, Barry hosts a "no parents allowed" birthday party in the basement for Adam - and sparks some surprisingly protective instincts in Erica.
When Erica cannot be consoled after her boyfriend dumps her, Murray steps in to help; Barry becomes obsessed with a new arcade game.
Beverly learns that Barry lied about joining the wrestling team; Erica flakes on a promise to take Adam to a local screening of Return of the Jedi.
When Murray's high school free throw record is broken, he attends a banquet as the guest of honor. Elsewhere at home, Barry decides to throw a party where he quickly loses the spotlight.
