After a violent incident, Navy enlistee Antwone Fisher (Derek Luke) is forced to see a psychiatrist, Dr. Jerome Davenport (Denzel Washington). While initially refusing to partake in any discussion at all, Fisher eventually begins to open up after a number of appointments. Over the course of treatment, he reveals a troubled and traumatic childhood. From a young age, Fisher has been physically and sexually abused by the people who were supposed to be taking care of him, including his foster mother. Although he finds it difficult to discuss, Davenport works with Fisher to draw out the emotionally-charged memories. In the process, Fisher is motivated to seek out his remaining relatives, whom he currently has no contact with, in an effort to establish meaningful family relationships. In the end, both Davenport and Fisher learn something about themselves as a result of the counseling.
