Outdoorsy adventurer Sarah (Shauna Macdonald) endures a personal tragedy which leaves her in a year-long state of depression. To help their long-time friend recover from the horrible loss, five girlfriends take her on a spelunking expedition in the wilderness of the Appalachian Mountains. Deep within a huge unexplored cave system, the group endures a cave-in which leaves them trapped and searching for another way out to daylight. The women must rely on each other to survive, while nerves are frayed and life-long friendships are strained by claustrophobia, untold secrets of betrayal, and the direness of their situation. Just when the ordeal seems unbearably hopeless, the women discover something in the caves that will redefine terror, as they descend literally and figuratively into darkness and death.
