"Do The Right Thing", which is set in the Bed-Stuy area of Brooklyn, New York, follows the experiences of Mookie (Spike Lee) on one of the steamiest summer days of the year. Mookie and a colorful group of characters, including Radio Raheem (Bill Nunn) play out varying scenarios centered around racial relations and general malaise. As the film progresses, the viewer observes tensions in the neighborhood beginning to mount. These racial issues test familial bonds as well as friendships in the neighborhood, until heated emotions reach a fever pitch. By the film’s end, both characters and viewers are left to question the motives behind the inflammatory occurrences of the day.
