Valentin Arregui (Raúl Juliá), a leftist political activist, and, Luis Molina (William Hurt), a homosexual and statutory rapist share a common cell in a Brazilian prison. Molina kills time by telling memories from his preferred movie, a wartime romantic thriller that is also a Nazi propaganda film. Thus, he tries to soothe Arregui and divert his attention from the ruthless realities of political detention, and the detachment from the woman of his concern. Arregui permits Molina to enter some of his defensive personality and discloses his mind. Regardless of their arguments in some areas, an improbable friendship develops between them.
