Julie Forrester (Elisabeth Shue) is a small town sheriff who must protect a group of spring break revelers from the carnivorous jaws of an invading school of prehistoric piranhas. Her son is unexpectedly thrust into danger when he accompanies a group of "documentarians" led by Derrick Jones (Jerry O'Connell) on a pleasure cruise. They find themselves surrounded by a group of the hungry piranhas while stranded on the town's lake.
