Star Is Born 176 min. NR 1954
Hollywood studios and the star system reveal enough sleaze to make this story an insider examination of their world in “A Star is Born.” Norman Maine (James Mason) hides a drinking problem, despite being the top studio star. He discovers a singer named Esther Blodgett and, later, renamed Vicki Lester (Judy Garland) who is singing unobtrusively with a small band. He recommends her for a screen test. After a name change and some disastrous turns, she begins her career and even marries Norman. Alas, his drinking grows worse as her career grows bigger. Featuring some songs like “Born in a Trunk” and “The Man That Got Away,” the music frames the growing suffering of its characters. Even as Vicki wins her Oscar, Norman makes a buffoonish television appearance to embarrass them both. Featuring sharp minor characters like the press agent and the studio boss, the story moves toward its inevitable tragedy and “the show must go on” finale.
Star Is Born 139 min. R 1976
Talented rock star John Norman Howard has seen his career begin to decline. Too many years of concerts and managers and life on the road have made him cynical and the monotony has taken its toll. Then he meets the innocent, pure and very talented singer Esther Hoffman. As one of his songs in the movie says "I'm gonna take you girl, I'm gonna show you how." And he does. He shows Esther the way to stardom while forsaking his own career. As they fall in love, her success only makes his decline even more apparent.
