Pro-surfer Steve Addington (Matthew McConaughey) is really living the surfer's dream, worrying about nothing and spending all his time surfing, drinking, getting high and chasing women. All this made possible by the constant flow of money from his sponsor, a well renown surf-board manufacturer. His dream is suddenly shattered as he learns, upon returning from a surfing trip abroad, that his sponsors have sold out to a big corporation. Through the corps’s manager in charge of handling the surf-related business, Eddie Zarno (Jeffrey Nordling), he soon learns that his new “owners” have very different plans for him than just being himself and enjoying his laid-back lifestyle: a pretty lurid reality TV show and the use of his image and other personal data as part of a brand new virtual reality surfing videogame are what Zarno has in mind for him. While Steve might be willing to consent to the reality show participation, he balks at the videogame part as he feels that it is against the true surfer’s spirit and staunchly refuses, despite Eddie’s threats, to do any further work for them. Threats soon turn to action as all of Steve’s credit lines are pulled and he finds himself, in the middle of a big wave drought to boot, unable to continue living the life he had enjoyed so far. But not all is lost as he befriends Zarno’s assistant Danni Martin (Alexie Gilmore) whose father is a very rich businessman back in New York. Danni takes heart to Steve’s desperate situation and convinces her father to take over the corporation and fire Zarno on the very spot, reinstating Steve in his surfing icon role and giving him free reign again.
