This book is intended as an introduction to British Sign Language (BSL) from a linguistic point of view. Margaret Deuchar sets BSL in a social and historical context and discusses in detail the grammar and structure of signs and signs in combination. American Sign Language is referred to regularly to compare BSL with a well known sign language. Afterwards, Deuchar discusses the acquisition of sign language and the benefits and problems with doing research in this field.
