a deaf girl's odyssey : Jessica Rees
Jessica Rees is bright, pretty and lively, a student at Oxford University enjoying a normal life to the full. She is also deaf. Meningitis at the age of four left her almost completely without hearing; then in 1980 she became totally deaf after a hit and run accident robbed her of the last vestiges of sound, replacing them with the constant buzz of tinnitus.
In this moving autobiography Jessica Rees portrays one determined girl's struggle to come to terms with her handicap and to succeed in the hearing world. With courage, humour and without a trace of self pity she urges better understanding of the needs of the deaf as well as recounting a highly perceptive, warmly human story.
