While attending high school in Dayton, Ohio, I had the opportunity to experience the stan of the public school systems Hearing Impaired program, or HIP as il was often referred to on memos and posters.
Various handout sheets of information were given to make us aware of what was to come, but for me this was just a chance to try and make new friends. Even that took on a new meaning when I met and became fascinated with a young lady who is hearing impaired.
At first, communicating was a bit of a problem, since, at the lime I was llmlted to fingerspelling. Finger-spelling is literally spelling out words using the manual alphabet. This was still another problem since I could only do that very slowly (my fingers always tangle up). So I asked my friend to leach me sign language and found she was more pleased to take the time to do this.
From that relationship, I was later inspired to create this story for four of the characters from my own cantoon. WHAT ARE FRIENDS FOR?
