‘I wouldn’t feel I could go along to a college and knock on the door and ask to go in. They wouldn't want people like me. lt’s for hearing people, really isn’t it, all that?’
This handbook is the result of a two-year project to highlight good practice in me field of comtnulng education for deaf and hard of hearing adults undetaken by NIACE with support from the Joseph Rowntree Foundation.
Three “main areas are addressed:
*language and learning. which looks at the crucial differences in terms of communication, culture, leaving strategies and support.
*the range of current provision, and approaches to extending me present narrow curriculum range.
*policy, planning and participation.
The handbook is an essential guide to policy-makers and pvovlders who want to meet deaf and hard of hearing adult learners' needs, and provides a basis for developing access to
post-compulsory education for this group.
