a linguistic introduction to language acquisition
This book is intended for all students of linguistics and child language , and also for those concerned with language teaching or language remediation. For readers in these latter two groups it is concerned not with how to teach , but with enabling teachers and therapist to formulate their own method, based on grater knowledge of the facts of language acquisition.
Writing more from the viewpoint of linguistics than psychology, the author presents the linguistic facts of language acquisition in children from birth to the age of five years. The final chapter deals with early school- age learning in fields of reading and writing. Theoretical implications and issues are discusses as they arise from the facts, and major overall theories are outlined. The book is extensively referenced for the benefit of those readers who wish to study particular topics in more depth. An explanatory glossary of linguistic and phonetic terms is included to make it equally useful for those with no background in this field.
