This Book is about speech and its acquisition by hearing-impaired children. As such, it is concerned with the form rather than with the content of spoken language - with phonetics and phonology rather than morphology, syntax, and semantics. it does not however, ignore language. It concentrates on how to overcome the inadequacies of speech generally associated with deafness so that intelligible spoken expression can be achieved. It provides a framework for the systematic development and evaluation of speech target behaviors and the sub skills that underlie them, but it recognizes that more than exercises or drills is required if the child is to learn to talk.
This text deals with basic theoretical issues, though it also provides detailed description of strategies that may be used to evoke and develop specific sound patterns. These strategies indicate how thoughtful readers may - through reference to basic principles - program their work to meet the particular needs of the individual child, whether the child surfers moderate, severe, profound, or total deafness. Beyond them lies the need for dynamic, creative teaching. Similarly, beyond the theories and principles put forward remains the need for further research.
