Each episode is recorded as an eyewitness account, with dramatic tableaux enacted by characters like Mary, Peter, Pontius Pilate, and Judas, whose emotions and motivations are explored in depth. The author, a German nun, witnessed the events in a vision that lasted over 40 days during the Lenten season of 1823. That vision was transcribed and edited by famed poet Klemens Maria Brentano, and first published in Germany in 1833.
