Plot

The last four days in the life of Christ are portrayed with extraordinary realism in this deeply moving, visionary account. The Last Supper, Jesus's agony in the garden, his arrest and trial, and his crucifixion and resurrection are described in meticulous detail. Each episode is recorded as an eyewitness account, with dramatic tableaux enacted by characters like Mary, Peter, Pontius Pilate, and Judas, whose emotions and motivations are explored in depth. The author, a German nun, witnessed the events in a vision that lasted over 40 days during the Lenten season of 1823. That vision was transcribed and edited by famed poet Klemens Maria Brentano, and first published in Germany in 1833. Considered one of the great works of Catholic mysticism, The Dolorous Passion of Our Lord Jesus Christ has been updated for modern readers as an inspiration not only to Christians, but also to all who seek spiritual guidance.
