The Nazis: A Warning From History
This documentary series exposes the popular myths surrounding the rise and fall of the Third Reich. Exploring how they came to power, how they ruled, how they treated their occupied territories and, above all, how a cultured nation could be responsible for such acts of inhumanity.
Through compelling interviews and archive film and records, the series paints an astonishing and often unpalatable picture of the Nazi rule. Contemporaries recall the true extent of Hitler's power; eye-witnesses describe the horrors perpetrated on the Eastern Front; specially shot film in Lithuania reveals the development of the 'Final Solution' and ordinary Germans shed new light on the relationship between the party and the people.
Part 1 examines how Hitler was "helped into power by economic circumstance and the support and miscalculation of others," according to narrator Samuel West. The hour documents Hitler's ascendance to the chancellorship in January 1933.
A look at the extraordinary popularity of both Hitler and the Nazis, as well as the astonishing degree of voluntary support ordinary Germans gave the infamous Gestapo.
A look at how Hitler found himself at war with Britain - a country whose achievements he admired - and allied to his ideological enemy, the Soviet Union.
This film provides insights into how the Nazis' reign of terror in Poland was characterised by huge population upheavals, chaos, petty squabbles and sheer bloodlust.
Part 5 travels "The Road to Treblinka," examining the Holocaust and how the Nazis moved from a policy of ethnic "relocation" to one of mass murder. Included: an interview with one of the 70 known survivors of the Treblinka death camp.
Fear and hatred of Bolshevism drove many Germans to fight to the bitter end, despite continued suffering.
