John Morgan (Richard Harris) is an English aristocrat who is captured by the Dakota Sioux Indians where he is tortured and mocked by the tribe. Another captive Batiste (Jean Gascon) who is also the tribe's fool, ends up helping him learn the tribe's culture and language. But he knows his only chance at freedom is to get the respect of the tribe. So he joins the war parties and kills two warriors from another tribe. After this the Sioux allow him to claim warrior status and after painful initiation rites also allow him to take the native name of "Horse". He eventually becomes a respected member of the tribe.
