Reading Rainbow
Ostensibly, Reading Rainbow was created to motivate children to read. But it was much more. The show was hosted by Levar Burton on location to introduce many fields. Reading Rainbow began as a magazine format in 1983, when magazine shows were at their peak. True to form, this was Reading Rainbow's best period. It was nominated for a prime-time Emmy in 1985, based on its premise to involve students in carefully selected literature, among other things. For 20 years, Great Plains National (GPN) was at the forefront of instructional television. They had several talented personnel who pioneered the ITV field in many ways. Then, in 1982, Twila C. Liggett oversaw the creation of the one series more associated with GPN than any other. Ironically, that series would became the principal force that would end the ITV industry. Reading Rainbow has been a double-edged sword ever since. As the 1980s dwindled down and hopes of a brighter future dimmed proportionately, Reading Rain
LeVar is at a logger's camp for the bulk of the program. After the feature book, this program shows the work necessary to put out a forest fire.
Videotaped in March 1985, according to GPN's Reading Rainbow media guide, LeVar visits Hawaii to see an active volcano.
LeVar has entered a bicycle race in Hawaii. He's in competition not just with the other bikers, but with himself as well. This program also includes a lengthy piece on a kung fu class.
It's New York City, the site of so many Reading Rainbow programs, but this time LeVar walks through New York during the night. In a separate film shot, a man ventures into a cave to see bats.
LeVar checks out the Library of Congress. Among the activities shown: how a book is delivered to the front desk, the vast film library, and how damaged books are repaired.
LeVar and the characters in the animated feature book go through a lot of emotions in this episode. So does Koko the Gorilla, who has recently been given a pet kitten.
Videotaped at Ellis Island in 1985, this show is truly American or, more correctly, a salute to all those who immigrated to America. A big portion of this show is LeVar's journey to the Statue of Liberty, then under restoration.
THere's a lot of verbal mayhem as LeVar is in Louisiana, beginning near a swamp and ending on a Mississippi Riverboat. Most of the sounds come from the mouth of Fred Newman, seen at length recording the narration of this episode's feature book.
