Plot

Reason Cansino isn't like other 15-year-olds. For one thing, she's spent most of her life in the Australian Outback on the run from grandmother Esmeralda -- a real-life witch. For another, Reason got her name because her mother, Sarafina, liked it better than Logic or Rationality of Intellect -- all good words representing the calm, ordered certainty that opposed Esmeralda's world. As did math, the Fibonacci series in particular. Which is why Ree was taught early on to perform "Fibs" in her head with lightning speed -- good protection from the very Magic her mother swears does not exist. Then one day Sarafina's focus on the rational comes to a grinding halt when she's consigned to a mental ward. And no amount of Fibs calculation can still Ree's terror when she finds herself forced to live with her worst nightmare: her grandmother. But Ree begins to question Sarafina's stories of the witch's evil as she explores Esmeralda's exquisite Sydney home. That is, until she uses a curious key to unlock the back door -- only to step onto a New York City street. Suddently Magic is real ... and Reason is Magic!
