They left death and destruction in their path until they came to…
It is 1641, the twenty-third year of the Thirty Years' War. Vogel (Omar Sharif), once a teacher, is now a wandering beggar since his entire family was slaughtered in the madness of the war. He encounters a group of ruthless mercenaries who are riding toward a nearby village. As the mercenaries begin their ritual massacre of the village people, Vogel runs for his life and escapes to a quiet village in a beautiful valley. Thus far, the village is untouched by the carnage of war.
But before long, the mercenaries find the little town, and bring with them the tension, strife and battle that accompany war.
