Alle Anderen
There's been a bounty of great new features by young German filmmakers in recent years and this second feature by Maren Ade is one of the very best. The subject of much acclaim since its debut at the Berlin festival last year (it makes its Toronto premiere this weekend), Everyone Else is a bold, perceptive and admirably ruthless drama about a twenty-something couple whose relationship begins to crumble while on holiday in Sardinia.
Unflinching in its examination of the latent anxieties, hurts and pressures that can imperil any relationship, Ade's remarkable movie invites comparisons to John Cassavetes films at their most fraught and emotionally freighted.
