Ou-yang Feng (Leslie Cheung) is a swordsman for hire who lives in the middle of the ancient China’s desert. Troubled by the memory of a lost love he acts as an agent for mercenary assassins. However he is cured with a magic wine received from another swordsman named Huang Yao-shi (Tony Leung). Before these events Huang Yao-shi meets Mu-rong Yin (Brigitte Lin) who promises that he will take her sister to be his wife. But Yin hires Ou-yang Feng to kill Huang because he didn’t keep his promise. All characters learn the intangible secret of real love but become selfish and cold, trying to suppress any relationship from the start so as not to suffer from love loss in the wild desert.
